Project 2: Artist Statement

When coming up with this project I wanted to try and think of projection on a more 3-dimensional plane. I have seen videos on the internet of artists or engineers creating almost holographic images with fog so I wanted to attempt that process. While I knew I would not be able to create any type of actual holographic images, I still wanted to see how I could use the fog to bend the light from the projector. Fog is also a tricky screen to project onto so it would be a challenge to find the right balance. Too much fog and you just create a glowing light cloud. Too little fog and video will project through the fog.
Regardless, both will bend the light in different ways which in the end is what I decided to experiment with. Light is such an amazing tool for art and depending on its qualities and positions it can completely change the subject matter. Since fog is ever moving it will continually change the projection light in different ways to make the art installation into something that I haven't thought of or originally intended.

Refik Anadol’s Infinity is an intriguing piece that allows the viewer to truly delve into the concept of an infinite space. Through the use of space, light, and sound, Anadol is able to distort the fragile line that is our reality. In a way, by not using familiar spaces in the piece it further disembodies the viewer delving them into the world of infinity. An interesting thought from the description of the piece is that it should be approached as a means of return rather than an escape.   Refik Anadol is a media artist from Istanbul, Turkey and is currently based in Los Angeles, California. His works utilize audio and visual stimulations to create an immersive installation for his viewers. I first heard of him from his work Melting Memories where he turned brain waves into a living art piece. Final Project: Gallery Instructions

When the gallery receives the Infinity Box, they will receive five panels (four mirror panels and one white panel) and a usb with the Infinity video. The Infinity Box will take up 36”x30” of space and it will need about 3 to 4 feet of extra space for the projector. The person who builds the box should put three screws in each side to ensure that the panels are secure. Once the Infinity Box is set up it must be set in a corner area and facing the wall to make sure it doesn’t take attention away from the other installations. The gallery must have the MadMapper application on their computer and set up the laptop and projector up to 3 to 4 feet away from the box (depending on the type of the projector). The viewers are allowed to lay inside of the box, but it will disrupt the projection. If the viewers decide to lie inside the Infinity Box, they will receive a 2 minute time limit.
